Structural Design Engineer, Grid

Job Details:

About Us:

Ocado Technology’s Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) teams are at the cutting-edge of our technology engineering business. From the design and manufacture of the most state-of-the-art products in the business, to their delivery into our multi-million pound Customer Fulfilment Centres (CFCs) across the globe, our bespoke electrical and mechanical development projects are pushing the boundaries of innovation and automation.Imagine some of the challenges of developing an ultra high throughput system that is the size of 4 football pitches. Or the challenges of tolerance, scale, static and dynamic loads, manufacturing and rapid deployment for systems of this scale. Think of the challenges of developing a system with all of these requirements that must be “fit and forget” over a 20 year period of 24/7 use. And then imagine achieving all of this within a system that must remain safe and operational after an earthquake. If you like challenges, and are looking to work on innovative solutions to problems that have never been solved within a fast paced, exciting organisation, then we’d love to hear from you.

About the Role:

As a Structural Engineer within the Grid and Tote department, you will work in collaboration with the other stream engineering disciplines, such as Mechanical Design, Manufacturing, and Technical Authorities, to design and analyse Grid products to withstand stresses and pressures imposed through environmental conditions, human use, and the wider Ocado system equipment that suits different seismic territories – both domestic and international. These products use structural engineering to reinforce sound engineering principles and perform up-front de-risking, which drive Ocado’s expectations of quality. As a Structural Engineer, your work will involve:

  • Preparing reports, designs, and high-level drawings.
  • Making calculations about pressures, loads, stresses and fatigue.
  • Considering the strength of construction materials and selecting materials appropriately.
  • Providing technical advice on safe designs and construction.
  • Analysing configurations of the basic components of a structure.
  • Liaising with professional staff such as architects and engineers.
  • Using computer-aided design technology for simulation purposes (FE Modelling).
  • Communicating solutions and designs to varying levels of seniority in both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Quality and timely delivery of your own work.
  • Estimation of work and contribution to project planning.
  • Identifying and communicating design risks and mitigating them.
  • Supporting Mechanical Design Engineers with design variation.
  • Contributing to the peer/design review board.
  • Being the point of contact for Structural Design queries.

About You:You will have:

  • A degree-level qualification in structural engineering or a related discipline and / or proven experience as a structural engineer.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to liaise with professionals from other engineering or product disciplines, and to present back work.
  • An analytical approach, with strong problem-solving skills.
  • A proven track record of working effectively and communicating progress under pressure and within tight deadlines.
  • A collaborative mindset, but also the ability to work independently when required.
  • Experience assessing, challenging and identifying gaps in technical requirements.
  • Proficiency with designing concepts and products to meet technical requirements.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to conduct FE analysis.
  • Confidence with verifying your own designs and FEA using hand calculations and statistical analysis.
  • The ability to identify and mitigate design risk through calculation, simulation and proof of concept.
  • Experience with applying Eurocode Standards for Steel and Aluminium Structures.
  • Familiarity with writing design specifications in response to technical requirements and de-risk activities.

This would make you stand out from the crowd:

  • A professional registration e.g. with the Institute of Structural Engineers.
  • Knowledge of construction methods, materials, and legal regulations.
  • Sound understanding of physics and mathematics.
  • Three-dimensional conceptual skills.
  • Understanding of implementing technical drawings, tolerancing, and GD&T to BS8888.
