We are looking for a Senior Finance Manager to join the Finance Team based at HPFT’s Head Office in Hatfield.

The right candidate will be an experienced and qualified accountant; this role is fundamental to the accounting, reporting and performance of a circa £40m Corporate and Central Services budget. The post holder will be considered a Senior Manager in the Finance Team and take an active Continuous Quality Improvement role in both the Corporate Services function and finance team.

Currently staff are working on site 60% of their week and from home for 40%, subject to individual risk assessments.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

There has never been a more exciting time to join HPFT following our CQC rating of Outstanding awarded in April 2019. We are on a journey from “Good to Great” as we continue to innovate, improve, transform, and ultimately deliver the very highest standards of care to the service users and communities that we serve. We have a history of performing financially too, having achieved the required Control Totals over the last few years, and delivering surpluses to drive investment.

The post holder is accountable for the senior level management accounting support for Support and Central Services across the Trust. This includes accountability for the management accounts for that area, ensuring the accuracy of accruals, provision of variance analysis, and identification and mitigation of key risks; supporting services to identify and deliver savings targets; monitoring of income, expenditure and activity; and accountability for budget setting.

The post holder will act proactively to identify and resolve risks and significant issues, particularly for areas that have been identified as outliers by benchmarking data, are overspending, have increasing expenditure, or other financial difficulties. They will take a lead in addressing risks with Corporate Heads to ensure the set financial budget is delivered. They will take a lead role for central income, particularly for Health Education England, including Medical income for trainee doctors, as well as other areas of training. The post holder will need to develop and utilise knowledge of Standing Financial Instructions, Standing Orders, current legislation, and HPFT policies and procedures. The post holder will ensure the development of their direct report Management Accountant and work collaboratively with the Finance Managers to support the wider finance team to develop and cover during periods of leave.

Person specification

KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Professional Accountancy Qualification, or degree and equivalent experience in finance position.
  • Demonstrable experience in working with budget holders and Senior Managers in discussing finance and non-finance matters.
  • Evidence of continued professional development – e.g. NHS Finance Personal Portfolio
  • Undertaking or willing to undertake further management courses

EXPERIENCE

  • 3 years of financial management
  • NHS experience and financial regime
