Finance Analyst – Group Financial Reporting

The role is part of the external financial reporting team within Sumo Group (Group) finance. It will be extremely varied, with involvement in all aspects of Group financial reporting including month-end management accounts, statutory accounts, reporting to Sumo’s parent company and preparation of financial information and analysis for the Board. The role will also have responsibility for key finance processes and provide an opportunity to understand the key commercial drivers of the business. The candidate will study for a professional finance qualification/level 7 apprenticeship (ACA or ACCA), working within a high-performing finance team along a structured pathway of development and progression, and funding and study support will be provided.

We also regularly assess the skills, experience and development needs of our Finance Analysts and may look to adjust or rotate the Finance Analysts’ responsibilities from time to time to reflect these.

Location: Sheffield, South Yorkshire or some remote work considered

Within this role you will:

  • Study towards a professional finance qualification (ACA or ACCA), complete all practical work experience and apply learnings to the role in Sumo
  • Be responsible for key monthly financial processes including:
  • Preparation of financial information and analysis for the monthly Operating Committee and executive board, preparing commentary and insight and ensuring accurate and timely consolidation and submission of board packs
  • Consolidation of Group results for all operating businesses and overseas teams, using Group financial reporting systems
  • Preparation of financial entries for month end, including property lease accounting, foreign exchange and intercompany eliminations
  • Maintenance of key balance sheet reconciliations and controls
  • Maintenance of the Group financial reporting structure and master data within finance systems, collaborating with the wider finance team to ensure reporting is accurate and correct reporting structures are in place
  • Develop an understanding of the key commercial drivers of the Group
  • Develop technical knowledge and understanding and support the application of technical accounting concepts in the business
  • Prepare year-end financial statements and disclosures for review by the Finance Manager and Financial Controller
  • Support the Group’s statutory audit, liaising with the external audit team and providing information and analysis
  • Prepare submissions for reporting to the Group’s ultimate Parent, ensuring the accuracy of data and timely submission by all members of the finance team
  • Be responsible for other elements of external financial reporting e.g. statistical reporting
  • Continually review and improve finance processes
  • Support the Finance Manager – Financial Reporting and Group FC in preparation of ad hoc analysis and projects as required

We need you to have:

  • A graduate degree or equivalent and strong academic background
  • Experience in a finance role is desirable
  • Desire to study for a professional finance qualification (ACA, ACCA) or already part qualified
  • Strong excel and other MS Office skills and the ability to analyse and manipulate data
  • Strong communication skills and ability to build relationships with a range of stakeholders   
  • An enthusiastic, team-based ethos. Ability to collaborate across teams
  • The ability to prioritise in a dynamic business, be well organised, and able to work autonomously and to strict deadlines.
  • A willingness to learn and develop new skills.

  • A strong desire to implement change and best practices, with the confidence to question processes and recommend improvements
