Job overview

The Performance Information Team works within the Business Intelligence Unit to develop data and informatics to provide reporting outputs to both internal and external stakeholders. The team consists of experienced analysts, SQL & SSRS developers and information managers.

Main duties of the job

Our core purpose is to work alongside the Performance Systems Team to translate data stored within the Data Warehouse into insight and analytics to support decision-making within King’s and among our external stakeholders, via:

  • Development of performance dashboards;
  • Production and maintenance of the Integrated Scorecard Suite;
  • Preparation, validation and submission of statutory returns to the DoH and other external bodies;
  • Provision of ad-hoc information analysis and support to King’s divisions and their clinicians.

We are now recruiting for the Business Intelligence Analyst (B6) role within the team. Core responsibilities include:

  • To support the Senior Business Intelligence Analysts, Operational Reporting Manager and Reporting Development Manager in providing information and analytical service via the BIU’s Oracle (SQL) platform to corporate functions and the operational divisions.
  • To lead on core information requirements which support the organisation’s performance and clinical objectives.
  • To liaise with users of information to resolve problems, provide innovative ways of presenting information, and develop new analyses to inform divisions and Trust decision making.

Person specification

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria

  • Degree in mathematics, computing or other discipline with a large numeracy component.
  • Excellent data presentation skills, written, graphical and verbal.
  • Skilled in using data query tools, spreadsheets and databases.
  • A well-developed understanding of data retrieval, data processing and information interpretation.

Desirable criteria

  • One year’s experience in Information Management within the NHS preferred.
  • Knowledge of Care Record systems, data capture processes and Information Governance.

Analytical skills

Essential criteria

  • An ability to think creatively when developing and implementing complex changes to reporting requirements.
  • An ability to handle diverse information requests and analyse options with a non-technical audience.
  • Able to manipulate and combine data from a variety of systems, understand the data structures within the systems and join extracted data sets into uniform outputs.

Technical skills

Essential criteria

  • Perform complex data processing which requires data interpretation.
  • Proficient with Excel (macro level preferred) and possess SQL query language skills e.g.: Oracle, SQL Server.
  • A demonstrable aptitude for acquiring new skills rapidly to meet changing objectives and implementation of new systems.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of NHS record schemas e.g.: PIMS, EPR.

Communication and Relationships

Essential criteria

  • Utilises interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships with staff at all levels.
  • Interpret requirements and present reports that can be understood by a wide audience
  • Capable of communicating impacts of changes in Information Management policies to a diverse audience.
  • Ability to represent the department without line management supervision on particular projects and negotiate conflicting needs with non-technical staff.
  • Able to deliver teaching to departmental colleagues on own specialism or newly-acquired skills.
