Full job description
PhycoWorks is a venture-backed biotech start-up based in London. We believe that industry should integrate with the environment rather than degrade it. Our mission is to accelerate humanity’s transition to a sustainable bioeconomy. We are building a platform that uses AI and synthetic biology to develop algae strains that can transform CO2 into valuable products and are purpose-built for industrial application.
PhycoWorks was founded in June 2021 through Entrepreneur First, a world leading start-up accelerator. Since then, we have assembled a team of world-class scientists and engineers at our facilities in the heart of London. We have engineered highly valuable, novel microalgae strains allowing us to secure 7-figure commercial contracts with industrial giants. Our data platform has processed over 250 reactor years of industrial data and is being used by leading algae producers across the world to analyse and optimise their production.
We are expanding our founding team of scientists and engineers that are passionate about using technology to create a more sustainable future. This is an exciting opportunity to join a mission-driven start-up working at the intersection of biology and computation.
Your role
We are seeking an experienced Algal Microbiologist to join our team. As an Algal Microbiologist, you will be responsible for developing and leading strain characterisation projects and maintaining our collection of microalgal strains. You will work closely with both web-lab team and dry-lab teams to generate experimental data for computational models and contribute to our strain development and engineering efforts.
Your responsibilities
- Develop and lead strain characterisation projects according to team goals.
- Maintain microalgal strain culture collection.
- Design and execute phenotypic and biochemical assays to characterize algal strains.
- Develop and improve research protocols and procedures.
- Stay updated with the latest advancements in algal microbiology and related fields.
Need to have
- Postgraduate degree in a relevant scientific discipline with proven experience in algal microbiology.
- Advanced knowledge of biology and physiology of microalgae.
- Proficiency in algal culturing techniques (marine and fresh water) including liquid and solid media, as well as cryopreservation.
- Proficiency of genetic transformation techniques in microalgae, such as conjugation and electroporation
- Experience with bright-field and fluorescence microscopy.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with Benchling or similar electronic lab notebook (ELN) and inventory management systems (training will be provided)
- Experience with high-throughput screening techniques.
- Experience with analytical platforms such as HPLC, mass spectroscopy, NMR and FT-IR
- Experience with working with a large culture collection.
- Experience with large scale culturing >100 L.
Benefits
- 30 days of paid annual leave per year
- Flexible work options.
- Pension contributions.
- Cycle to work scheme.
- Brand new lab and office facilities in central London.
- Monthly team social (anything from go karting to poker nights).
- VISA sponsorship is available.
