Space Situational Awareness Team Lead

Astroscale is seeking to employ a motivated Space Situational Awareness (SSA) Lead at our facility based in Harwell, UK. This is a unique opportunity to join a dynamic and rapidly growing company seeking to make a positive contribution to the growing problem of orbital debris that endangers humankind’s continued use of space as an asset. SSA is not only a fundamental need for all our missions and services, it is also being explored as a potential space-based service to be implemented on our future spacecraft. This is a unique opportunity to lead Astroscale’s SSA team, including overseeing the technical development of new SSA capabilities, ensuring correct SSA support for our future missions, and coordinating activities across the company. This role is ideally suited to candidates with a background in SSA, experience managing a specialised team of technical experts, and engaging with external organisations and stakeholders.

Whilst the candidate will primarily work in the UK, they may interact with Astroscale’s Japan and US Offices, and may expect to be required to travel abroad as needed in support of Astroscale projects and operations.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the advancement of Astroscale’s understanding, requirements and future mission demands for SSA;
  • Working closely with the Office of the CTO, support the development and implementation of a global SSA strategy, including acquisition of data for future missions, coordination with partner companies, and creation of new SSA revenue streams;
  • Lead on the exploration, development and implementation of new capabilities to perform SSA and inspection activities from space-based platforms;
  • Oversee current and future SSA contracts and programmes of work, including the technical content and direction of the work, liaising with appropriate industry, academic and government groups, and ensuring the relevance of the SSA programmes to Astroscale and the company goals;
  • Lead on the development and submission of bids involving SSA capabilities, engaging and shaping future potential opportunities with commercial, civil and defence stakeholders.;
  • Work closely with Business Development and Analysis teams at Astroscale to help profile customer requirements, including eliciting and analysing customers true needs, developing new SSA market opportunities, and helping to construct appropriate solutions brought into service;
  • Participate in technical meetings, both in the UK and abroad, with academic collaborators, industry and government agencies;
  • Support SSA and Space Traffic Management (STM) policy development;
  • Lead and manage a team of SSA technical experts to ensure the needs of Astroscale are met

Essential Skills

  • University BSc / MSc (or similar) degree in an engineering, scientific or mathematical discipline, or equivalent science based/engineering experience
  • Evidence of previous experience in relevant roles, such as flight dynamics, astrodynamics or space surveillance and tracking (SST) / SSA.
  • Experience of leading, working on or supporting technical bids of different sizes, as well as engaging with stakeholders to form and shape future SSA opportunities.
  • Understanding, and experience of, the international SSA ecosystem, including key stakeholders, customers, and commercial, civil and military SSA organisations, and current SSA/STM policy environment.
  • Experience of leading a team and working in a close and cooperative manner, as well ability to work individually in a self-motivated, proactive manner.
  • Ability to manage and take responsibility for delivery of own work, within agreed project budgets and schedules
  • Strong understanding of the space industry and ecosystem.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and written/verbal communication skills including to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Can demonstrates behaviours in line with Astroscale values (mission and people focused, transparent, innovative and pioneering, diverse and customer focused) 

Desirable skills

  • Post-graduate degree in an engineering, scientific or mathematical discipline
  • Significant experience within the space SST/ SSA sector, including commercial, technical and policy domain
  • Experience working closely with the UK MoD
  • UK National Security Clearance
